About the work
A folk play by Bertolt Brecht about the Finnish landowner Puntila, who becomes jovial and generous when drunk but harsh and calculating when sober. His chauffeur Matti sees through the contradiction between Puntila's personal friendliness and the social relationship between master and servant. The play was developed in Finland with Hella Wuolijoki and premiered in 1948.
